With the official reveal of the upcoming fighting game Mortal Kombat 11, we got to see a lot of little glimpses of the game that will be pretty much dominating my time come April 23rd. While there are a lot of fighting game mechanics that were revealed today, I am going to focus on the story elements of one of the trailers revealed today, mostly because story is my thing. I am the furthest thing from an FGC elite.
So, without further ado…
Right away we get our first glimpse at Scorpion, the undead-when-he-wants-to-be ninja. While this story trailer doesn’t focus on it at all, every characters gear and weaponry can be modified before every match during the versus mode.
Here we see that Scorpion has come face-to-face with the thunder god himself, Raiden, echoing the battle from the reveal trailer seen back in the 2018 Video Game Awards.
Eight seconds in and we get to see perhaps Mortal Kombat’s most famous jobber, Baraka. Thanks to the improvements in the graphics from the last game, there are tons of tiny details upon Baraka’s person that really flesh out his image. Outside of the spike protruding from his shoulders, his iconic blades that jut out from his forearms are shown to be made from bone. A nasty detail that has been lost before this entry in the series.
Skarlet makes her return to the ring with Mortal Kombat 11. First appearing as a dlc character for Mortal Kombat 9 back in 2011, Skarlet had a major influence upon the Mortal Kombat X comics published by DC Comics. It’s nice to see that this game will treat her as more than just eye candy.
At fifteen second in, we see that Raiden is getting more and more comfortable embracing his dark side since the defeat of the elder God Shinnok back in Mortal Kombat X. Based on this trailer, I got a real “Superman” vibe from his look and characterization. And not the apple pie version of Superman either, the kind of rage-fueled Supes we saw in the Injustice series.
Twenty seconds in and Liu Kang and Kung Lao look like they’re about to shit their pants as they are confronted by Scorpion. It should be noted that this image has massive implications to the overall story of this latest entry in the Mortal Kombat series, as both Shaolin Monks are significantly younger and more human looking as they were both (for lack of a better term) demons in the last game.
This is a great image of a new feature in the actual fighting found within Mortal Kombat 11. When your health is decreased to thirty percent you can inflict a “Fatal Blow” for massive damage. This maneuver seems to be an improvement on the last two games “X-Ray feature. Here you can see Baraka biting into and tearing away a piece of someone’s bicep.
Forty two seconds in and we get our first official look at the Grandmaster of the Lin Kuei clan, Sub-Zero.
Forty nine seconds in and we see that Sub-Zero hasn’t lost a step, as he is seen peppering Baraka with dozens of icicles across his torso and face.
Can you believe that this isn’t even a Fatality?
Here we see our first look at what I think we’re all safely assuming is the new villain of this series, Kronika, a god-like character that can seemingly control time or perhaps even fate. Here she’s seen ominously telling Liu Kang that once again he has chosen “the wrong fate”. Doesn’t she look like the girl from Never Ending Story?
Liu Kang are next seen coming face to stoic face with a newcomer to the series, Geras. He seemingly has the ability to manipulate time which could open up a wealth of possibilities for some unique combos during gameplay.
Here is a quick glimpse at Geras’ time manipulation at work as Liu Kang and Kung Lao, for the second time today, shit their pants.
Sonya Blade delivering a beat down on Sub-Zero barely a minute into the trailer. More on her later.
One minute and seven seconds in and we get our first look at a brutal fatality delivered by Scorpion. I am continually impressed by the imaginations of the guys at NetherRealm Studios. Honestly, how many different ways are there to dismember a person?
Holy shit…Baraka just ripped a man’s face off! Just like Nicolas Cage!
Raiden can be seen here doing battle with possibly hundreds of some type of…I don’t know, lizard men that aren’t Reptile. But if you look off in the background, it looks like you can see the pyramid from Mortal Kombat Armageddon. Of course, he could just be fighting in the depths of the Nether Realm, who knows?
Here is a much better look at returning fan-favorite, Sonya Blade. It looks like thirty years in the Army hasn’t slowed her down one bit.
And yes, the rumors were true; Sonya Blade is being voiced by former UFC champion and current WWE Raw Women’s champion, Ronda Rousey.
I guess ice axes are a thing.
Sub-Zero’s got something in his eye.
From what I’ve seen so far, Skarlet definitely has the most brutal fatality, with Baraka coming in at a close second.
And there you have it, Mortal Kombat is on the way with a pending release date of April 23rd, 2019. If you pre-order this game now, not only will you get to play as series antagonist Shao Khan, but you will also get beta access on March 28th.
