The standalone Joker film, directed by Todd Phillips and starring Joaquin Phoenix, is slated to hit theaters on October 4, 2019, and today we got our first real look at the film with the first teaser trailer.
I’ll be honest, I’m not the biggest fan of the character of the Joker. As I’ve gotten older and read more and more comics, and heard more and more repetitive praise for the Clown Prince of Crime, I have just gotten tired of hearing about how amazing everyone thinks he is. While I;m not saying I could create a better character (honestly, I couldn’t) I just think that Batman has so many other villains that are a better challenge for him, both physically and mentally. Plus, it is okay if I just think that the Dark Knight was just an okay movie, right?
Well, with the release of the first teaser trailer from Warner Bros, I am well and truly hooked on this new, seemingly Batman-less, take on the character. While this is far from our first onscreen take on the Joker, this is the first one that really made me feel that he was both believable and relatable. The story of Phoenix’s Arthur Flek being slowly broken down psychologically made me think of how easily people can let themselves get low. Low enough to start to hate themselves and often times lash out at the world around them. A world that they may just fear as well as hate.
The trailer quickly shows off a star-studded cast including Robert De Niro and Zazie Beetz and quite possibly the most realistic version of Gotham City ever to be put on film. The surroundings are dirty, lifeless and unmaintained and the characters seem to reflect that. Personally, I am very hyped for this new take on an old character.
Joker will hit theaters on October 4th.
