This is literally the dumbest thing I have read about all week.
So last Tuesday, Paramount Pictures released the first official trailer for their upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog movie, starring James Marsden and Jim Carrey. The trailer actually is kind of funny and it’s nice to actually see that Jim Carrey is having fun portraying the nefarious Doctor Robotnik…or maybe he just doesn’t give a damn anymore, but that’s funny too.
But of course, as usual, the “fan” reaction to the design of a live action Sonic was not the best thing since sliced bread. Many people were incredibly vocal about their disdain for the new design of Sonic as many were saying that it ruined the character as well as their childhood.
Score one for originality.
But to the shock and surprise of at least one person (me), the film’s director Jeff Fowler took to twitter on Thursday and assured fans that the studio will be working on a redesign of the titular hedgehog and that they are committed to making Sonic the “best he can be.”.
Honestly, I’m at a loss here. I cannot believe that a studio like Paramount, the same studio responsible for the Transformers movies, decided to change the look of a digital character just six months from release because a few people on Twitter are upset about what a high-speed hedgehog looks like. Did anyone see Transformers, the franchise that has made over four billion dollars? Did anyone see the designs of the robots in disguise? Or how about the 2014 and 2016 Ninja Turtles films…you know the Turtles films that made less money than Transformers? It should be obvious to everyone with eyesight that Paramount is all about changing the design of beloved characters from various media.
It should also come as no surprise that fans will cry and complain about virtually anything nowadays, but the fact that a studio is listening and changing direction based on a bunch of whiny man-children that have never made a movie before is beyond ridiculous. Why is this studio bending over for fans who were probably never going to see this film in the first place? Are they that hard up for cash? Do they need a hit that bad? Perhaps the answer isn’t changing direction six months before a film is due for release, perhaps you should be making films for less money. I understand that special effects are costly, but whatever the supposed redesign of Sonic will look like is going to inflate the budget something serious.
Paramount Pictures, I know you’re not stupid. You have been in the business of making movies since 1912, why kneel to a bunch of people that donn’t have your best interests at heart? Honestly, these keyboard warriors bashing your film months before release don’t actually care about your film. They just want something to complain about. You should know this and you should stick to your guns and keep Sonic the way he is because if you’re going to let yourself get bullied here, where does it stop?
